In 2012, we're going to see a surge in mermaid books. Okay, more like a tidal wave! These are only the books that have covers right now. Young Adult fiction has embraced mermaids in a major way, albeit in the hopes that they'll become the next vampire or werewolf. I think it's great that mermaid stories are being published, but lets not turn mermaids into a fad. Seriously. The world doesn't need mermaid versions of Edward Cullen and Bella Swan. Hype aside, all these books show that there is a thriving interest in mermaids, and that we're moving beyond tired icons like Ariel and Daryl Hannah in SPLASH. Question is, which one of these books will be the Hunger Games of its genre? I guess we'll have to wait, read, and see!
