Danielle Pederson is the author of Lasera, a young adult novel about a girl named Valerie and the merman who lives in her pool. Today, leap day, Danielle is launching her series with a bevy of festivities. The Oscars are this weekend, and like every year, I've barely seen any of the films nominated. (I did see The Help at least.) Entertainment Weekly has some great features on the nominees including Martin Scorsese's HUGO. HUGO isn't about mermaids; it's about a boy, an automaton, and the first motion pictures ever made. One of those pictures was Georges Melies' underwater adventure, Fairyland: Kingdom of the Fairies. Martin Scorsese recreated that set for HUGO and it is breathtaking. Could you imagine being on that set? I need to see HUGO stat!

Once upon a time in a Glitter-Box by the sea... That's the opening line to Ruby Summer's bio on their website. I encourage you all to read it, all of it, and become as smitten with these girls as I am. I've never heard of this country/pop duo—mostly because I don't listen to country pop. Sorry, Taylor Swift—but this video of the girls singing an acoustic version of their song, Mermaids & Poets, is too delightful to ignore. The girls of Ruby Summer are modern-day mermaids all the way. Remember back in July when Katy Perry posted a twitpic of herself dressed as a mermaid? The pic that started a crazy mermaid war between her and Lady Gaga who was in full-on Yuyi The Mermaid mode? Well, the final images have surfaced (yes, that pun was intended) and they're for GHD hair products. Katy's mermaid photos were taken by none other than visionary photographer David LaChapelle! I love it. I couldn't care less about what she's selling. Mermaid win for Katy Perry.
