Today was the 29th annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade, a dazzling spectacle celebrating the start of summer and the opening of the Atlantic Ocean. Sadly, I've never been to the parade, and it saddens me to have to recap it from other sources. Oh well, I will get there someday, I swear! This year, over 5,000 people came out to see (and take part in) one of the largest celebrations in self-expression. Men, women, and children indulge in their fantasies of the deep sea variety. It's colorful, wild, and what makes America beautiful. The costumes range from jaw-dropping feats of artistry to TMI. Really, some of those pasties need to be an inch or two larger, ladies. But anyways... This year's parade looked like a blast. Photographers on the scene are already posting their pics on flickr. Above are snaps from MikaelleS's flickr page. Swim on over and check out the rest. Plus, Aol has a slideshow and article on pre-parade preparations.
