Remember back in July when Katy Perry posted a twitpic of herself dressed as a mermaid? The pic that started a crazy mermaid war between her and Lady Gaga who was in full-on Yuyi The Mermaid mode? Well, the final images have surfaced (yes, that pun was intended) and they're for GHD hair products. Katy's mermaid photos were taken by none other than visionary photographer David LaChapelle! I love it. I couldn't care less about what she's selling. Mermaid win for Katy Perry.

Did you know that Lady Gaga's first production company was called Mermaid Music, LLC? Well now you know. I would kill to stand under that umbrella-ella-ella-a-a-a... (Yeah, that's a Rihanna song, but we all know Ri-Ri loves mermaids too.)

Lady Gaga dons her Yuyi the Mermaid persona once again, this time for the cover of Visionaire 61 LARGER THAN LIFE magazine. (And that's not an overstatement. The magazine holds two Guinness Book world records for the largest print magazine in circulation, clocking in at 7 feet tall and five inches wide! That's like the size of a bed, people. There's a smaller version, too, but not by much. It's a measly 3 x 4 feet.) In the pictorial, mergaga is covered in oil, an environmental statement, perhaps, but it's pure fashion fierceness to me. And the hair! I love the long, colorful locks more than her short aqua do. Mermaids are the future. You can order your own copy of Visionare 61 magazine here, and good luck getting the big one into your house.

Last night Lady Gaga gave a live interview on MTV in front of an audience of her little monsters. One question in particular had to do with her You and I video and what appears to be a sexual encounter between her Yuyi mermaid persona and the dude with the angel tattoo on his back. (Which is freakin' cool, by the way.) Well, Gaga's little monster wanted clarification on the scene and whether or not mermaids can have sex in general. Here's what she said: 

"Well that's actually part of what the metaphor is—is that you can't and sometimes in love you just can't make it work. And no matter what you do there's a giant boundary between you and someone else."

Well said. I think it echoes many beliefs regarding the symbolism of mermaids throughout history. And I like that the mermaid was used in a manner that goes beyond the visual.

OH. MY. GOD. It's here. It's finally HERE! Lady Gaga just released her You and I video!!!!

The video is a rural romance complete with cornfield contemplations with male self, barn dancing, some unexplainable torture/S&M/plastic surgery scenes, and the best part, the only part I care about: Lady Gaga as a mermaid! And she wears the tail well. Gaga's mermaid has a black fish tail, no nipples, and gills. It's pretty awesome and very Gaga. The song is about love, first love, and there's plenty of lovin' in the video. Now, this is groundbreaking...Mermaid sex is explained. Well, maybe, it could be just dry humping, but Yuyi and her Dr. Lover look like they're having a good time. My head is spinning. Where am I? I feel like David After Dentist. Is this real life...

Las Vegas Sun reports on the first annual MerCon/World Mermaid Awards convention. There’s a great gallery of pictures. Over 800 mermaids attended. No doubt this will be a yearly event.

 

Jackson Pearce, author of the 2012 book Fathomless (a retelling of The Little Mermaid) breaks down the difference between Disney’s Little Mermaid and its source material by Hans Christian Andersen. (FYI: Major spoilers if you have not watched or read either.)
