I think my heart skipped a beat when I saw these laser-cut pendant lights by Swedish designer, Ania Pauser. They’re called “Knopp” which means flower bud. Stylized flower petals can often look like fish scales, so you know I’m thinking mermaids and jellyfish and underwater worlds. A girl can dream... Ania is also a fantastic illustrator. I have been crushing on artist Clare Elsaesser’s sea and river paintings for quite some time now. Women who wade in water—particularly the Russian River near her home in Jenner, California—are a recurrent theme in her artwork. Clare’s paintings keep the watcher at a distance, which I like very much, and I often find myself wanting to tap on the shoulders of her models, or eavesdrop on the conversations between the wading couples. I have never, never seen anything like this before. Land meets sea in the most clever of ways in Petit Beasts’ Jellyfish Air Plants. Seriously, how delightful are these plants with sea urchins for planters. Creator, Cathy Van Hoang, is an art director and photographer from Long Beach, CA. In 2010, Katy Perry launched her second studio album Teenage Dream by rocking a bright blue mermaid wig. Over the course of nearly three years she’s become a living, breathing Rainbow Bright, mood-swinging from blue to purple to black to blonde, and now, back to blue. I’m certainly not complaining. There are only a handful of artists on this planet who can wear such a shade with confidence. Katy Perry is one such artist. Like all great artists, one must have a Picasso Blue Period, and with the breakup of her marriage to Russell Brand, it seems all this blue is her way of publicly expressing hurt and grief. Believe me, I’d like to associate it with the huge mermaid trend in fashion right now, but I highly doubt it. Hang in there, Katy Perry. I hope the many shades of blue are soothing to your healing heart.

The Oscars are this weekend, and like every year, I've barely seen any of the films nominated. (I did see The Help at least.) Entertainment Weekly has some great features on the nominees including Martin Scorsese's HUGO. HUGO isn't about mermaids; it's about a boy, an automaton, and the first motion pictures ever made. One of those pictures was Georges Melies' underwater adventure, Fairyland: Kingdom of the Fairies. Martin Scorsese recreated that set for HUGO and it is breathtaking. Could you imagine being on that set? I need to see HUGO stat!

I must be in a dark mood today, huh? I don't know why. It's nearly 50 degrees and sunny in Minnesota. In January! I am sure this is the first sign of the apocalypse. Anywho, I've wanted to post about these H.P. Lovecraft inspired paintings for a while now. They're by oil painter Travis Lewis, and they are darkly divine. This is totally blowing my mind right now. Blk. water is spring water naturally infused with fulvic acid, (a derivative of plant matter.) Yeah, this is natural, no dyes, no additives, nothing. The water comes black from the earth and it claims to be good for you. I have to admit, the water doesn't look appetizing. In fact, all I can think of is oil spills and that awful crocodile movie. But the packaging is totally badass. Keep drinking, and you've found you've turned to the dark side. Hell yes.

Actress/model Milla Jovovich is Photoshoptastic in these images from the 2012 Campari calendar, which has an apocalypse theme. These shots represent massive flooding, tsunamis, and what I thought was acid rain turns out to be the dawning of a new ice age. Cool yet a little cryptic. So there's a little indie film hitting theatres today, 11-11-11, based on Greek mythology called Immortals. It's a thinking man's film, which means I have no desire to see it. But upon viewing pictures of the actor who plays Poseidon, the Greek God of the Sea, I am reconsidering my position on this matter. A good looking lad in barely nothing but a gold trident is worth a thorough examination, even if said lad is normally seen in that movie about sparkly vampires and the pasty humans who love them.
