Spring has sprung early here in Minnesota, which means the usual blizzards have turned into drizzling rain. (No complaints here!) Snow days and rainy days are never a waste, and in a new picture book, The Mermaid Picnic, kids learn how fun a rainy day can truly be—with mermaids, of course. I recently had the pleasure of interviewing the author and illustrator of The Mermaid Picnic, Kitty Leech!
Book Summary:
A rainy day at the beach threatens to spoil Emily’s plans with her friends, but a mermaid doll and a special cookie recipe transform the disappointing downpour into an opportunity!
TW-E,L: In your picture book, mermaids help save the day by inspiring your protagonist, Emily, to make the best of a rainy day. Were you interested in mermaids as a child, too?
Kitty:
Yes! I have always been interested in fairies and mermaids, and other-worldly creatures.
TW-E,L: You wrote and illustrated The Mermaid Picnic. Did the illustrations come before or after you developed the story?
Kitty:
I developed them more or less at the same time, but I would say that overall the story came first.
TW-E,L: The Mermaid Picnic is sure to inspire kids to have their own mermaid picnic. Tell us about the added bonuses in the book.
Kitty:
I wanted kids to be able to make their own mermaid picnic, so I provided a recipe for Sand Tarts. After I had finished writing the book, I knew I wanted to include some mermaid songs, and was surprised at how few there were. I asked my cousin Ben Whittman (who is a composer) to write me a Mermaid Song to go with the book! He wrote “The Mermaid Girls”. Every book has a copy of the lyrics to the song, and special versions of the book have a CD recording of the song in the back. But the recipe and the song are just a starting point. Hopefully this will inspire kids to make up their own mermaid recipes and songs!

TW-E,L: Okay, let’s play a game of This or That. Here we go…
SAND TARTS OR SEANUT BUTTER & JELLYFISH SANDWICHES
Kitty: Sand Tarts! They taste really delicious if you make them on a rainy day at the seashore, but they also taste really delicious with Seanut Butter and Jellyfish Sandwiches!
RAIN OR SHINE
Kitty: Although I personally prefer shiny days at the shore, I think rainy days at the beach give you the opportunity to do something unexpected!
PICNIC INDOORS OR PICNIC OUTDOORS
Kitty: Outdoors, always! Rain or shine.

Kitty is giving away a copy of The Mermaid Picnic to one lucky urchin! To enter, simply leave a comment in this post. (Say hi, compliment Kitty on her beautiful book, or tell the world why mermaids are awesome.) I'll select a winner at random via Random.org. I'd sleep better at night if entrants were over the age of 13. U.S. residents only. Deadline to enter is March 20th 2012.
