Sun, surf, and exotic locals are the inspiration behind La Mer Collections, a designer watch company based here in the US. With a name like La Mer, it’s pretty easy to see where they get their inspiration from—Le Sea, of course. I’m in love with these nautical and mermaid-inspired wrap watches. Oooh! British actress Carey Mulligan looked amazing at the 2012 Met Gala. She's wearing a custom Prada dress covered in gold and silver paillettes. It's a mermaid dress without the mermaid silhouette. Wow!

I’ve seen my fair share of scaly dresses this season. The shell-shaped clutches and run-of-the-mill anchor necklaces are starting to bring the eye rolls. Just when I think I’ve seen it all, Refinery 29 profiles some amazing jewelry creations by Motley, a Washington D.C. based design collective. The Lure Collection features necklaces made with a material I never thought could look so beautiful, so perfect for modern day mermaids—fishing line.

I have been crushing on artist Clare Elsaesser’s sea and river paintings for quite some time now. Women who wade in water—particularly the Russian River near her home in Jenner, California—are a recurrent theme in her artwork. Clare’s paintings keep the watcher at a distance, which I like very much, and I often find myself wanting to tap on the shoulders of her models, or eavesdrop on the conversations between the wading couples. Here we have Sea of Love from Vogue Japan May 2012. These shots are my least favorite. They lack something I can't quite put my finger on. I'm not surprised that all of these spreads feature models of European decent—really, I'm not—but I was hoping for some diversity. The UK and Australian issues of Vogue feature women of color this May, which is awesome, but those lovely ladies aren't modeling mermaid frocks. (Sad face.)
